A Weekend to Remember in Chicago
What an unforgettable week it was!
From June 17–21, 2026, members of Varrick Chorus Inc. traveled from across the United States to Chicago for our annual Summer Concert Series - a celebration of music, fellowship, service, and community. What began as individual journeys from different cities quickly became a family reunion, united by one purpose: to share the gift of music.
Our camp officially began on Wednesday, June 17, and after everyone settled in, we gathered for our very first rehearsal. The evening was made even more exciting by Ghana's hard-fought 1- 0 victory over Panama in the FIFA World Cup. As Ghanaians would jokingly say, it may have been an "awam" win - a lucky one that had us all holding our breath - but a win is a win! That result certainly filled the rehearsal room with even more energy, laughter, and excitement as we prepared for the wonderful days ahead.
Sharing Music Beyond the Stage
On Thursday, we took music where it truly matters - into the hearts of people.
The choir visited The St. Joseph Village of Chicago, a leading senior living community in Chicago offering assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, rehabilitation, and respite care. There, we had the privilege of presenting a special musical program for the residents. It was a beautiful reminder that music is much more than entertainment - it is a universal language that comforts, connects, and heals.
As we sang, many residents smiled, clapped, and even joined us in singing familiar melodies. Some swayed gently to the rhythm, while others shared stories and words of appreciation after the performance. Witnessing those joyful moments reminded us of the incredible power of music to reduce loneliness, evoke cherished memories, and foster meaningful human connection.
It was an honor to spend time with such a wonderful community, and we left encouraged, knowing that our music had brought joy to many hearts.
An Evening of Musical Excellence
The highlight of the weekend arrived on Saturday, June 20, as The Varrick Chorus Inc. presented its Summer Concert at The Hyde Park Union Church.
Beginning promptly at 5:00 PM and ending around 7:15 PM, the concert took audiences on a rich musical journey spanning classical masterworks, spirituals, acappella selections, gospel music, and contemporary choral repertoire.
One of the defining features of Varrick Chorus Inc. is our commitment to celebrating African choral traditions, particularly the rich heritage of Ghanaian choral music. Alongside internationally recognized repertoire, audiences experienced beautifully crafted Ghanaian art music that blended indigenous rhythms, expressive harmonies, and cultural storytelling. This unique musical identity continues to distinguish Varrick Chorus Inc. and reflects our mission of preserving and sharing Africa's rich choral heritage with diverse audiences.
The response from the audience was truly heartwarming. Friends, families, supporters, and music lovers - including many who traveled from neighboring states - filled the sanctuary and rewarded every performance with enthusiastic applause. Their encouragement and warm reception made the evening even more memorable for every singer.
Ending with Thanksgiving
Our Summer Concert Series ended on Sunday with a special Thanksgiving service at the African Community United Methodist Church. It was a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary weekend - one filled with worship, gratitude, fellowship, and reflection. Together, we thanked God for safe travels, successful performances, meaningful outreach opportunities, and the friendships that continue to make Varrick Chorus Inc. more than just a choir - it is truly a family.
