Meet James Varrick Armaah
The story of contemporary African choral music cannot be told without recognizing the work of James Varrick Armaah. A celebrated Ghanaian composer, conductor, and cultural ambassador, Armaah has become one of the defining voices in the global presentation of African choral artistry.

Through both his compositions and leadership, he has helped bring African sacred and concert music to international stages with a level of musical refinement, emotional depth, and cultural authenticity that continues to inspire audiences worldwide. Best known for his iconic piece “Oye,” now one of the most widely performed African Christian choral works, Armaah has composed more than 300 original pieces. His music is marked by lyrical warmth, rhythmic vitality, and a seamless blending of African musical language with classical choral form. His works are performed by choirs across Africa, Europe, and North America, resonating deeply with both performers and listeners for their spiritual intensity and artistic richness.

As Founder and longtime Director of Harmonious Chorale Ghana, Armaah has led the ensemble in over 70 major concerts across nearly two decades, establishing it as one of Africa’s most respected choral institutions. His guest conducting has taken him across the United States, Canada, and West Africa, where he has collaborated with choirs in New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, Toronto, Maryland, Virginia, and Liberia — building musical bridges between continents and communities.

In 2024, Armaah brought this international vision to a new chapter with the founding of Varrick Chorus Inc., a U.S.-based choral ensemble devoted to the meeting point of African choral tradition and Western classical artistry. As Executive Director, he shapes the ensemble’s distinctive sound — one that combines tonal warmth, rhythmic precision, and expressive storytelling — while mentoring a new generation of African creatives in the diaspora.

Alongside his work as a performer and conductor, Armaah is a dedicated scholar and educator. He serves as an Assistant Lecturer in Music Theory and Composition at the University of Education, Winneba. His academic achievements include a PhD in Music (2025), an MPhil in Music Theory & Composition, an MBA in Human Resource Management, and a BFA in Music and Theatre Arts. His scholarship informs his artistry, grounding his creative work in both deep cultural knowledge and formal musical excellence.

James Varrick Armaah’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to excellence, faith, and cultural connection through music. Whether on the podium, in the classroom, or through his compositions, he continues to shape the sound and future of African choral music on the global stage.
