Our History
“The idea of a U.S.-based ensemble devoted to the vibrant meeting point of African choral tradition and Western classical artistry felt like a distant dream. In 2024, that vision became reality.” James Varrick Armaah

Founded by renowned Ghanaian composer James Varrick Armaah as part of the celebration of his 40th birthday, the ensemble brought together a remarkable community of young African creatives — primarily Ghanaian students and professionals living across the United States. What began as a milestone celebration quickly grew into a dynamic musical movement. Officially launched the same year, Varrick Chorus Inc. builds on the strength and beauty of African choral heritage while embracing the discipline, richness, and expressive range of the Western classical tradition.

From its earliest performances, the ensemble has been recognized for both its artistic excellence and its sense of purpose. Varrick Chorus Inc. has graced concert halls and community spaces in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Georgia, presenting five major performances that carried the rhythmic soul of African choral music alongside the harmonic depth of the Western choral canon. Each concert has served not only as a performance, but as a cultural exchange — a space where histories, languages, and traditions meet in harmony.

At the heart of Varrick Chorus Inc. is a belief that choral music can connect people across continents and generations. The ensemble’s sound reflects warmth, precision, and emotional storytelling, honoring the past while giving voice to the present. Through its performances, Varrick Chorus Inc. continues to grow as a cultural bridge — celebrating heritage, inspiring communities, and shaping a future where African and global choral traditions stand side by side on the world stage.
